Having watched more of the anime it really gives off Monogatari series and Shaft feels. The Monogatari series also had a few locations they commonly used as backdrops with no other characters except the relevant ones in the scene. It also had a mixture of comedy and supernatural elements, with the supernatural elements often being dangerous. The exorcists in that show also aren’t all powerful but do have some ability to help the protagonist with their supernatural woes. Most importantly, the main conflict for the main character is over their woes about being/becoming a vampire.

Yofukashi no Uta is not just a slice of life with a different setting. The nighttime is meant to be completely different world with unknown dangers and thrills. Discussing about the morality of the love between the underaged Kou and the timeless Nazuna is the least of the moral concerns with vampires being inhuman creatures ready to kill without the same moral considerations as humans. It is clearly demonstrated that any of the other vampires are ready to trick him into turning into a vampire or killing him. If anything, I think the ambiguity is what makes Yofukashi no Uta great and that is the point.

By interacting with other vampires, his friends and even a vampire hunting detective, he starts to question his desire to become a vampire which I think is the most important development in the second half of the anime. In the first half he was just running away from the life he was sick of living, but in the second half he’s giving it more thought. Personally I feel that the anime could go either way. It wouldn’t be odd if he couldn’t love Nazuna within the time frame and simply lived a normal life, taking away the experiences from the past year just because vampires are fickle. At the same time a lot could happen in a year, and the time limit could also be cop out because nobody really knows that much about vampires.

At the end of the day I think its an interesting series with good visuals and a captivating concept. Hopefully there’ll be more seasons but I’ll be reading the manga in the meantime.
